What to Do if You're in an Accident

You may want to print a copy of this accident checklist and keep it in every vehicle you drive.

  1. Make sure everyone in your vehicle is okay. Don't move anyone who is seriously injured.
  2. Switch on your vehicle's hazard lights. If you have signal flares or reflectors, place them by the roadside to alert other drivers.
  3. If your vehicle is drivable and you can do so safely, move it as far away as possible from moving traffic. If your vehicle is not drivable, get out, along with those passengers who are able, and walk to a safe place.
  4. Call 911.
  5. Call us at 1 800 769-2526 or from your cell phone #RBC (#722). A trained claims advisor will walk you through what to do, including how to deal with the other driver(s) involved. He or she will also:

    • Help explain your existing policy coverage
    • Call for a tow truck if your vehicle isn't drivable
    • Contact your family or friends to help you get home—or help arrange for a rental vehicle.
    • Advise whether you need to go to a collision-reporting centre

If you're eligible for our free Valet Service, our valet service provider will arrange for a flatbed tow truck to pick up your damaged vehicle wherever it is located and help provide you with a rental car. After your vehicle has been repaired, our valet service provider will arrange for a flatbed tow truck to deliver your vehicle back to you and have your rental car picked up.

  6. Exchange the following information with the other driver(s) involved: name, address, phone number, driver's licence number, vehicle information (make, model, year and color), insurance company and, if possible, policy number.
  7. If there are any witnesses to the accident, ask for their name, address and phone number. It's especially important to get this information from any witnesses who were not involved in the accident.

All products and services are subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable insurance contract. In the event of any conflict, the terms and conditions of the insurance contract will govern.

Underwritten by RBC Insurance Company of Canada or RBC General Insurance Company.

Valet Service is only available to customers who live in certain urban areas where volume allows RBC Insurance to offer this service.
