Protecting Yourself in Special Situations
Depending on your personal circumstances, you may need to include what is known as an endorsement or rider in your auto insurance policy. These are changes to your policy (sometimes optional) that increase or even reduce the amount of insurance coverage you would receive in certain situations.
Below are just a few examples of the extra protection you can get at RBC Insurance®. When you call or get a quote online, we'll recommend what's right for you.
Extra financial security for your family
Have you ever thought about the financial impact on your family if you were to be seriously injured or killed by an uninsured or underinsured driver?
Although the Uninsured Motorist/Automobile coverage in your policy will provide some financial protection, it only covers you up to the limits of your province or territory's minimum required liability coverage. For example, in Ontario, you or your family could receive up to $200,000 since that is the minimum amount of liability coverage required in Ontario.
The Family Protection Coverage endorsement supplements this coverage by providing significant financial protection—up to the limits of your liability coverage—if you or your eligible family members are injured or killed in an accident caused by an uninsured, under insured or unidentified (e.g. hit and run) at-fault motorist1.
Since this endorsement protects you up to the limits of your liability coverage, it's a good idea to purchase enough liability coverage to take care of your family's needs. At RBC Insurance, we recommend purchasing at least $1 million in liability coverage.
Added protection for a new vehicle
Are you planning to buy a new vehicle? If you are, consider the Waiver of Depreciation endorsement, which guarantees that no depreciation will be applied to your new vehicle for 24 months. This means we will not take depreciation into account when settling a claim for covered loss or damage to your vehicle1.
This endorsement also entitles you to receive Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts when your vehicle is repaired.
Alternate transportation benefits
Do you rely on your car for day-to-day needs like commuting, transporting family members or running errands?
If you do, the Loss of Vehicle Use endorsement can help you defray the cost of alternate transportation if your vehicle is being repaired or replaced due to a risk covered under your policy2.
For example, if you are in an accident and your car is in the repair shop for two weeks, this endorsement would reimburse you—up to the limit of your coverage—for a rental vehicle, taxicab or other public means of transportation during that two-week period.
Forgiveness for your first at-fault accident
Even the best drivers can have accidents. The Accident Protection endorsement will help protect your good driving record while at RBC Insurance and keep your premiums low3.
