Designed for Canadian residents who are age 18 through 50, our Critical Illness Insurance Plan offers financial support and valuable assistance services should you be diagnosed with and survive one of these three conditions.

With a variety of benefits, including a lump-sum payment of up to $75,000, this plan will help give you and your family the resources needed to better cope with the many physical, financial and emotional challenges of recovery.

Our Critical Illness Insurance Plan provides a lump-sum benefit and valuable assistance services to help you and your family cope with the financial and non-financial challenges of cancer, heart attack and stroke.

The plan offers the following key benefits:

  • Your choice of a lump-sum benefit amount of $10,000, $25,000, $50,000 or $75,000—to be used any way you wish
  • Affordable coverage for the three most common critical illnesses(2)—cancer(3), heart attack and stroke
  • Valuable assistance services (see below)
  • Optional Return of Premium on Death benefit, which can refund all of the premiums you have paid if you die while the policy is in force

How much critical illness insurance do you need?

Assistance services

In addition to the lump-sum benefit payment, this plan includes a unique combination of assistance services that can help you and your family better cope with the emotional stress and challenges of a critical illness:

  • Best Doctors®* Service: An authoritative resource for medical information and advice, Best Doctors helps take the guesswork out of finding the right medical care by giving you access to the best specialists worldwide and answers to complex medical questions.
  • Daily Living Assistance: Obtain information and resources to help you and your family manage day-to-day activities. This includes access to your very own care coach, a specially trained consultant who will work with you to develop a plan to help you manage day-to-day activities.
  • “The Healing Journey” Program: Receive support to help deal with the stress associated with a critical illness.
  • Early Assistance Benefit: Without reducing your critical illness benefit for future claims, you can receive 10% of your benefit (to a maximum of $50,000) if you are diagnosed with and satisfy the survival period for early prostate, breast or skin cancer or coronary angioplasty. The Early Assistance benefit is payable only once.

Eligibility Requirements

You are eligible to apply for our Critical Illness Insurance Plan if you:

  • Are between the ages of 18 and 50, and
  • Are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident/landed immigrant who has been in Canada for more than 12 months, and
  • Have not been diagnosed with, or have been treated for certain medical conditions (opens new window)

Note: If you are between the ages of 51 and 65, you may apply for our Critical Illness Recovery Plan Policy.

Covered Conditions

The Critical Illness Insurance Plan provides a lump-sum benefit if you are diagnosed with any of the following covered critical illnesses or conditions, as defined in the policy, and satisfy the survival period, as defined in the policy:

  • Cancer(3)

Your Premium and Term Options

The Critical Illness Insurance Plan is a 10-year term policy, renewable to age 65.

Premiums are regularly scheduled to change every 10 years. We will not change the plan benefits, but the premiums may be subject to change. However, we cannot change the premium unless we do so for an entire group of policyholders sharing similar characteristics.

2) Benefit is paid when you are diagnosed with a covered critical illness, as defined in the policy, and satisfy the survival period, as defined in the policy.

3) Cancer is defined as the definite diagnosis of a tumour characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of malignant cells and the invasion of tissue. The diagnosis of Cancer must be made by a specialist. Exclusion: No critical illness benefit will be payable under Cancer for: carcinoma in situ; Stage 1A malignant melanoma (melanoma less than or equal to one millimetre (1.0 mm) in thickness, not ulcerated and without Clark level IV or level V invasion); any non-melanoma skin cancer that has not metastasized; or Stage A (T1a or T1b) prostate cancer.

4) Applicants with certain skin cancers other than melanoma or certain early state cancers may be eligible for coverage. In addition, some forms of testicular cancer may be considered for coverage five years after successful completion of treatment.

5) If colon polyps are present, coverage is not available. If colon polyps have been removed and a biopsy performed, coverage may be available depending on the medical details.

6) Except as prescribed by a physician or as directed by the manufacturer in the case of non-prescribed medication.
