Because of this, EVs have fewer moving parts, which means less maintenance and less risk of mechanical issues. But as anyone who\u2019s owned a smartphone knows, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcinsurance.com\/en-ca\/advice-learning\/home-insurance\/lithium-ion-battery-fires-canada\/\" data-dig-id=\"LP-CarInsurance-41545-4204acfc\" data-dig-category=\"LP-CarInsurance\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"lithium batteries\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">lithium batteries<\/a> lose their ability to hold a charge over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thankfully, some EV batteries come with a warranty from the manufacturer, typically for about eight years or 160,000 kilometres. This warranty protects you if the battery starts to degrade too soon due to a defect. But consult your vehicle\u2019s warranty for specific terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what if your battery is damaged in an accident or catches fire? In this case, coverage would fall to your insurance policy (in the case of fire, so long as you have comprehensive coverage).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s also one other thing to consider: charging stations. While you need to go to a gas station to top up a fuel-powered vehicle, your EV can be topped up right at home. Your home charging station may be covered by your EV auto or home insurance. Plus, since EVs are heavier than regular fuel cars, there\u2019s a higher risk of damage to all parties if you\u2019re in a crash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For all these reasons, insurance for an EV can cost more than for a regular fuel vehicle \u2014 but not always.
