If your tuition fees were covered by you and not paid (or reimbursed) by parents, employers, certain job training programs, or a federal program to help athletes, you can claim all amounts over $100. Sorry smarty pants, other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/revenue-agency\/services\/tax\/individuals\/topics\/about-your-tax-return\/tax-return\/completing-a-tax-return\/deductions-credits-expenses\/line-323-your-tuition-education-textbook-amounts\/amounts-which-cannot-claimed-tuition-fees.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">costs<\/a> associated with schooling including textbooks, lodging, meals, and that new laptop, are not eligible.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"h-claim-your-commute\">Claim Your Commute<\/h4>\n<p>Whether you get to work using public transit or your own set of wheels, there may be a deduction to make the ride a little smoother. If you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/revenue-agency\/services\/tax\/individuals\/topics\/about-your-tax-return\/tax-return\/completing-a-tax-return\/deductions-credits-expenses\/line-229-other-employment-expenses\/salaried-employees\/allowable-motor-vehicle-expenses.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">drive your own vehicle<\/a> and you&#8217;re often required to work away from your employer&#8217;s place of business, and don&#8217;t receive a vehicle allowance, you may be able to claim fuel, insurance, maintenance, leasing costs, and more! No car? Your transit pass might be eligible as an expense on Line 364. Just be sure to keep those receipts, record keeping is key.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"h-keep-it-professional\">Keep it Professional<\/h4>\n<p>Hard work can really pay off when it&#8217;s time to file. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/revenue-agency\/services\/tax\/individuals\/topics\/about-your-tax-return\/tax-return\/completing-a-tax-return\/deductions-credits-expenses\/line-212-annual-union-professional-like-dues.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Professional fees<\/a> such as union dues, required board memberships, and necessary liability or malpractice insurance, even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/revenue-agency\/services\/tax\/individuals\/topics\/about-your-tax-return\/tax-return\/completing-a-tax-return\/deductions-credits-expenses\/line-323-your-tuition-education-textbook-amounts\/eligible-tuition-fees.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">licensing and examination fees<\/a>, can be claimed on lines 212 and 323.
