If so, you might have questions about the planned changes to the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of October 1, 2019, OHIP will no longer cover Ontario travellers facing emergency medical expenses outside of Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-q1-what-does-ohip-currently-cover-for-out-of-country-travel\">Q1. What does OHIP currently cover for out of country travel?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A. Ontarians covered by OHIP currently qualify for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.gov.on.ca\/en\/public\/programs\/ohip\/outofcountry\/travellers.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">limited medical benefits<\/a> while travelling outside of Canada. If you are travelling before October 1, 2019 your coverage includes in-patient and out-patient services for emergency medical situations that arise while you are out of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Existing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/page\/ohip-coverage-while-outside-canada#section-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OHIP out-of-country<\/a> <em>in-patient<\/em> services include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"disc-list\">\n<li>Up to $400 per day for high levels of care such as admission and treatment in an Intensive Care Unit, Coronary Care Unit, Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, or operating room services.<\/li>\n<li>Up to $200 per day for any other level of care.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Existing OHIP out-of-country <em>out-patient<\/em> services include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"disc-list\">\n<li>Up to $50 per day for out-patient services such as an emergency room visit, MRI or CT scan.<\/li>\n<li>Up to $25 per day for a doctor&#8217;s visit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-q2-how-much-would-ohip-have-helped-in-an-emergency-situation-outside-of-canada\">Q2. How much would OHIP have helped in an emergency situation outside of Canada?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A. The average emergency room visit in the U.S. costs $2,506 CAD per day, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcostinstitute.org\/blog\/entry\/er-facility-prices-charges-2009-2016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Health Care Cost Institute<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/doug-ford-ohip-out-of-country-emergency-coverage-1.5109027\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent CBC news<\/a> report, U.S. hospitals charge 10 to 15 times the amounts currently covered by OHIP Out of Country Services. The cost of treatments will differ depending on the type of emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-q3-will-the-ohip-change-have-a-large-effect-on-snowbirds\">Q3. Will the OHIP change have a large effect on snowbirds?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A. Possibly.
