Who Can Enrol?
Your acceptance is guaranteed if you are:
- A customer of any RBC® company
- Ages 18-69
- A Canadian resident
You may enrol your spouse/partner if he or she is between age 18 and 74. (You must have been living with your partner for at least one year.)
What's Covered?
Provides a tax-free daily benefit to you or your spouse for hospitalization resulting from an accident. You would also receive a lump-sum payment equal to the total value of your daily benefits during hospitalization.
For example, if you are hospitalized for five full days, you could receive up to $200 per day, plus a lump-sum payment of $1,000. Your total payment would be $2,000, tax-free.
- Maximum length of coverage: 365 days per condition
- Maximum possible benefit amount: $146,000
Basic Coverage does not provide a tax-free benefit for hospitalization due directly or indirectly to any of the following:
- Suicide
- War
- Intoxication
- Drugs/poison (voluntary ingestion)
- Committing or attempting to commit a criminal offence
- High-risk activities (scuba diving, skydiving, parachuting, rock or mountain climbing)
- Cosmetic surgery (unless it is due to an accidental injury)
- A daily benefit will also not be paid for hospitalization in a hospital outside of Canada or for hospital stays for the primary purpose of receiving rehabilitation or palliative care.
Basic Coverage also does not provide a tax-free benefit for hospitalization due to sickness. (Enhanced Coverage provides a tax-free benefit for hospitalization due to sickness or accident.)
About Your Premiums

Provides a tax-free daily benefit to you or your spouse for hospitalization resulting from an accident or sickness.
- Maximum length of coverage: 365 days per condition
- Maximum possible benefit amount: $73,000
There is an elimination period of 3 full days before benefits are paid if you are hospitalized as a result of sickness. This means that if you are hospitalized as a result of sickness for 3 days or less, no benefit will be paid.
Enhanced Coverage does not provide a tax-free benefit for hospitalization due directly or indirectly to any of the following:
- Suicide
- War
- Intoxication
- Drugs/poison (voluntary ingestion)
- Committing or attempting to commit a criminal offence
- High-risk activities (scuba diving, skydiving, parachuting, rock or mountain climbing)
- Cosmetic surgery (unless it is due to an accidental injury)
- Pre-Existing Condition or Sickness – a condition or sickness for which the insured person visited or consulted a doctor, had signs or symptoms, had tests done or received treatment during the 12 months immediately preceding the effective date of coverage or at any time when this coverage was not in force because it had lapsed. Any pre-existing condition or sickness will be covered after this coverage has been in force continuously for two years immediately prior to the date of hospitalization. If you increase your coverage amount, a new Pre-Existing Condition or Sickness exclusion will apply on the amount of the increase and begin on the effective date of the increase in coverage.

About Your Premiums
Your payments will not increase with age. With Enhanced Coverage, your rates and benefits are based on your age at the time you enrol, so you’ll get the best premium when you’re in a younger age range.

The money is yours to use any way you wish. You can use it to help with your recovery, pay unexpected bills, replace lost income or meet other expenses.
Your benefit amount will depend on several factors:
- The coverage you purchased (Basic or Enhanced)
- Your age when you enrolled (Enhanced Coverage)
- Your smoking status (Enhanced Coverage)
- The length of your hospital stay (up to 365 days per condition)
The maximum possible Basic Coverage benefit amount is $146,000. The maximum possible Enhanced Coverage benefit amount is $73,000.
Under Enhanced Coverage, the benefit payment is reduced by 20% for smokers. However, if you enrol as a smoker but file a claim after you've quit smoking, you'll receive the larger benefit. (When you submit your claim, you will need to disclose whether you are currently a smoker or a non-smoker.)
You can receive benefits for a hospital stay of up to 365 days.
In the event of death, your estate will receive the coverage benefits.
After we process your enrolment form, you will receive a Certificate of Insurance. You will find your coverage effective date on this certificate.
Your Royal RecoverAssist coverage ends on the earliest of the following dates:
- The 31st day after a premium is not paid;
- The date you are no longer a Canadian resident;
- The effective date of coverage following your 75th birthday;
- The date we stop offering it because the group policy providing this coverage has been cancelled;
- The date you notify us by telephone or in writing that you want to terminate coverage.In this case, termination will be effective on the day before your next premium due date; or
- The date you die.
Note: When your coverage ends, coverage for your spouse also ends.
